Hatteras Island Activities
Located in the village of Buxton, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick Lighthouse in the U.S., standing at 208 feet tall. The present lighthouse was built in 1870 and still serves the purpose of warning sailors of the treacherous Diamond Shoals. In 1999, the lighthouse made a historic move inland, farther out of the reach of the ever-encroaching Atlantic. The lighthouse keeper’s quarters serves as a museum and gift shop. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse opens for climbing on the Friday before Easter Sunday and closes for the season on Columbus Day each year. The lighthouse is a must-see landmark when vacationing on Hatteras Island.
