Saturday, September 17th, marked the 12th Annual Day at the Docks, a festival in Hatteras Village that celebrates the watermen of Hatteras Island. Covering the docks from Hatteras Village Marina down to Oden’s Dock, islanders gather under multiple tents to celebrate an industry that has sustained it’s people for as long as we have inhabited these shores. Education tents, music, poetry, demos on fish cleaning and seafood cooking, harbor tours, an island-wide chowder cook-off, crab races and more are all finished off at sundown with the annual blessing of the fleet, where everyone hops on the nearest boat and heads out into the inlet for a time of prayer and blessings for both the watermen who are with us and those who have gone too soon.
