The natural beauty of Hatteras Island and the Outer Banks of North Carolina is one of the most inspiring and enchanting attributes of this unique coastal destination. For hundreds of years, visitors have marveled at the breathtaking beaches, tranquil marshes and the wildlife of this delicate chain of barrier islands. The extraordinary ecosystem we call home remains in constant motion - shifting with the tides and breezes.

Hatteras is one of a string of barrier islands that run parallel to the North Carolina coast. It is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and about 85 percent of it is federally owned and protected from development. Its 60 miles or so of shoreline has some of the most pristine and isolated beaches on the East Coast with the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the wide, shallow Pamlico Sound on the west. Even in the summer season, it's not difficult to find quiet beaches with their high dunes topped with majestic sea oats. The island is one of the country's premier vacation spots for newlyweds and families, fishermen and hunters, surfers and sailors, beachcombers and bikers, and all who appreciate the natural beauty of Hatteras Island.
