It’s a Family Tradition—The Midgett Family & The History of Hatteras Island
The Midgett family proudly shares the history and heritage of Hatteras Island, and has called its sandy shores their home for at least 3 centuries, and with strong island roots, Midgett has been serving Hatteras Island and this tight-knit community for over a century. The Midgett family are the descendants of the tough, independent seafaring men and women who managed to thrive and survive on these isolated barrier islands. They have been fishermen, lifesavers and surfmen. They have been operators of the famous Manteo—Hatteras Bus Line, played a role in establishing the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and so much more. In 1938 at the young ages of 17 and 13, two brothers, Anderson and Stockton Midgett, began the Manteo—Hatteras Bus Line with their brother Harold. This bus line transported visitors, delivered mail, and daily newspapers everyday, rain or shine. Anything that the people needed to be delivered up and down the island relied on the Manteo—Hatteras Bus Line to get the job done. This bus line drove on the sandy beaches in the days before roads and bridges were built, often times getting stuck and needing an extra push. Everyone was there to help each other out along the way.
These two brothers were also a part of establishing the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which was established on January 12, 1953. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore was America’s first national seashore park, and is now one of the top destinations for family vacations across the United States. All along the coast of the Outer Banks, the ocean floor has become home to more shipwrecks than any other place in the country, hence the nickname, “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” There is so much history to be discovered that lies beneath the sandy grounds that have shaped and molded the Outer Banks into what it is today! The Midgett family has always been, and still are, a part of many important local organizations that strive daily to support and improve Hatteras Island.
In the 1960's the Midgett brothers started a Hatteras Island real estate business, and today, they are the owners of the area's premier, full-service real estate company on Hatteras Island. With a branch on the vacation rentals business as well, their children, grandchildren, and the other well-trained staff of Midgett Realty offer over 500 Hatteras vacation cottages and condos for rent. Midgett Realty is one of the island's oldest family-owned businesses and is the only real estate company owned and managed by Hatteras Island natives. Anderson and Stockton Midgett paved the way for the hospitality and tourism industry that has flourished on Hatteras Island for many years. They knew that once people experienced the pristine beaches, world-class fishing, and natural beauty this island had to offer, they would be back for more; and back they came, generation after generation. Hatteras Island has many visitors that come back year after year for a memorable vacation.
The Midgett Realty family stands ready to share with you all the experiences they have had over several generations of living and working on the beautiful Hatteras Island.
