There is always fun to be had on Hatteras Island, no matter the season. As summer is quickly coming to a close and the cooler days of fall will be here before we know it, we want to share two family fun events held annually in Hatteras Village that are must attends, should you be able to make it to this little place that we know and love.

2 Great Events, 1 Great Place

Day at The Docks | September 17-18, 2021
Post Hurricane Isabel in 2003 (which cut access to the village from the rest of the island), the community, anchored by the commercial and charter fishermen, banded together, built back and supported one another though great loss. As a result, Day at the Docks was born to celebrate the “Spirit of Hatteras”. The event is a confirmation of the strength of community, heritage and living traditions of the waterman.

Day at the Docks is chock full of activities for the entire family and is a Hatteras Island tradition that you won’t want to miss! This two-day event features crab races, dock fishing and a fish t-shirt painting station for the kids, as well as live tours of the USCG 47’ Motor Lifeboat held by the US Coast Guard. Adults can enjoy the Concrete Marlin Contest, educational demos such as net hanging and pound net displays, live music and the crowd favorite Chowder Cook-Off! Also being introduced this year is “Seafood Under the Stars”, a chef-prepared 5-course dinner with an optional wine pairing featuring locally sourced seafood. View the menu here and purchase reserve seating online here. Kick the day off with the HUMC Fishy 5K sponsored by Midgett Realty and end the day with the Blessing of the Fleet, where villagers head out into the sound to pay their respects to the watermen whose lives were lost and pray for blessings for those who remain among the fleet, continuing the tradition of a life on the water.

10th Annual Surfin’ Turkey 5K & Puppy Drum Fun Run | November 25, 2021
“It’s for the kids!” That’s the popular slogan behind the Surfin’ Turkey 5K, sponsored by Midgett Realty and held annually in Hatteras Village. Benefitting the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund which provides funding for educational opportunities and enrichment in Hatteras Island Schools, this is more than just a race, it really is for the kids.

Kicking off on Thanksgiving morning, it’s the perfect family fun event to give thanks and give back. You can also preface your turkey dinner with a provided hot pancake breakfast for all and microbrew beer provided by Carolina Brewery (for those 21 and up, of course). Learn more about the event here and register or donate online here.
