People who love art tend to love the Outer Banks. There is so much scenery, wildlife and natural beauty to draw inspiration from. With that, there is an abundance of talent on Hatteras Island, making it an art lover’s haven.

Each village has a gallery or two, but the central area for galleries and studios on Hatteras Island is in the quaint little village of Frisco, also known as “Gallery Row”. There, you will find the following collection of galleries (listed north to south for a convenient art tour itinerary):

Indian Town Gallery:

Now entering their 17th season, Indian Town Gallery is well versed in art of all mediums. Featuring their boldest collection of handmade jewelry, painting, pottery, photography and sculpture yet, their selection of local and coastal work is massive. Additionally, they have lots of North Carolina jewelry and pottery, and if you’re looking for a unique gift, they’ve got all sorts of art and accessories made out of metal car engine parts, wine bottles, recycled glass, forks and spoons, old license plates, vinyl record albums and much more to adorn your home or person. One look around Indian Town Gallery and you’ll be convinced that the spirit of creativity is abundant by the sea!

Empty Nest Studio & Gallery:

“The Empty Nest Studio & Gallery is the working studio of artist/owner Crystal Blackmon. Here a visitor can find her manipulating precious metals and unusual gemstones into one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. Also available are her photographs, along with artwork in acrylic and watercolor.”

Sandy Bay Gallery:
Spring Hours: Monday – Saturday, 10:00am – 5:00pm
Year Opened: 1998

With an intricate eye for art and design, Linda Hilton originally started her well-established gallery in Hatteras Village before her move to “Gallery Row” just a couple of years ago. With a strong fan base, she has curated a collection unlike any other on the island. Partnering with her daughter and son-in-law, Sandy Bay Gallery also uniquely hosts Hatteras Yoga, the island’s premier yoga studio, which offers an array of weekly and one-on-one classes. The artwork at Sandy Bay exemplifies the remarkable natural beauty of the Outer Banks with a wide-ranging collection of jewelry, paintings, blown glass, sculpture, ceramics, and handcrafted furniture. They offer an inviting atmosphere where you will be on a first name basis by your next visit!

Browning Studios: Art by Linda Meyer Browning:
Spring Hours: Linda Browning’s private studio is open by appointment to all art lovers and those who wish to have instruction. Phone: (252) 995-3662
Year Opened:  Jan. 1, 2005, immediately after closing her 20-year-old gallery business, Browning Artworks

After closing her 20-year business, Browning Artworks, Linda Browning established Browning Studios where she teaches watercolor painting technique and sells her watercolors and photo composites.

Frisco Art Center:
Spring Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 10:30am – 4:30pm

Featuring the Sea Glass Gallery, Pottery Cottage and Christmas Shop, Frisco Art Center boasts a great variety of product at decent prices.

Red Drum Pottery:
Spring Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 8:00am – 5:00pm

Open early for the coffee lovers and early morning risers! Along with their coffee shop, Red Drum Pottery offers locally made pottery, jewelry, ornaments and tiles. Additionally, they will be teaching Raku pottery and paint-on-pottery classes! “The fire that drives Rhonda and Wes is the creative spirit within all of us. They choose to explore and bask in the spirit of original ideas, creations in paint, clay and music.”
