All About that Beach

There are a million ways to experience the beach. Fishing, sunning, swimming, shelling, reading, running, walking, watersports and so much more! Obviously beaching it on our sunny shores is the number one thing to do when summering on Hatteras Island!

Actually Vacation

It’s not unheard of to need a vacation from your vacation--just a few days to catch up on rest from all of the go-go-go. Your trip to Hatteras Island can be whatever you make it, but the general vibe is pretty low-key and life seems to slow down a little when you step into island time. Really ride that wave and take the time to find your center with a yoga class from Hatteras Yoga. Cena Jennette, island native, owner and certified instructor offers a variety of classes and workshops in addition to private classes and beach yoga. Her flexibility leans itself to the needs of each individual and this well-established island studio will set the tone for the relaxing vacation you came to Hatteras Island to receive.

Crunch On

Cape Hatteras National Seashore has pristine beaches, clear waters, good fishing, some of the best surfing on the East Coast, beach driving, fresh seafood and delicious eats, eclectic artisans and so on. It’s a beach vacationer’s dream, really. But it’s also a National Park. And with that comes an array of differences from other beaches that aren’t always obvious to the vacationer’s eye. In addition to the Refuge (you know, the long stretches of seemingly nothing before and between the villages), you’ll see an occasional area roped off on the beach, also known as an enclosure. These little spaces are bird or turtle nest enclosures that can sometimes seem annoying, but are made to protect various endangered species. The National Park Service (NPS) is dedicated to the preservation of our island and the protection of its wildlife. Chat up a ranger or attend one of their various classes to learn more about the wild side of Hatteras Island. You can even volunteer with an organization called N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles)*, which is a local non-profit dedicated to the preservation and protection of the habitats and migration routes of Sea Turtles and other marine animals on the OBX. Not only do they rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife, but they also monitor turtle nests and more!

*Please note: Volunteering with NEST does require some mandatory training (also provided by NEST). Learn more.
