For most of us, the Holidays are a special time of year...in more ways than one! The nostalgia, the hustle and bustle, the coziness of chunky sweaters and warm blankets. Holiday music, intricately designed store windows, inspirational and heart-warming movies that make you want to immediately give your entire bank account to the first person who needs it. Glitter, glitter and MORE glitter--it's the most wonderful time of the year!!!

While many folks are used to locally funded emergency services with paid employees, such as police, fire and EMT, some of Hatteras Island's services are volunteer only. Like in the days of the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, water and fire rescue are 100% volunteer-based, with bravely trained islanders risking their lives to save the lives of others, locals and visitors alike.
The shoulder seasons, October in particular, highlight the beauty of Hatteras Island like none other. Crowds are smaller, days are shorter, sunsets are richer, nights are cooler and the holidays are creeping up, starting with Halloween at the month's end. What better place to celebrate the fun of Halloween than on Hatteras Island?
Fall is here and we're coasting into October with boo-tiful beach days abounding! Shoulder season is a wonderful time to visit Hatteras Island as the kids are in school and the crowds are smaller, lines are shorter and bonus, the weather is still gorgeous!
In case you missed it, the Chicamacomico Historical Association celebrated the Mirlo Centennial Commemoration on August 16th, 2018.
