Waves, the middle of the Tri-Villages, is home to Hatteras Island’s increasingly large kiteboarding population, as it holds a great deal of opportunity for the watersports fanatic.
Once known as “South Rodanthe”, the tiny fishing village was coined “Waves” when it got a new post office in the 1930’s. The name was derived from the influential Atlantic Ocean to the East. While the post offices for the Tri-Villages have all been combined into one in the present day, the name still stands as a reminder of the impact the sea has on both the town and the island as a whole.
