Stretching out over the Atlantic Ocean in the heart of Avon, Avon Fishing Pier is both a popular Hatteras Island fishing destination and an important part of the island’s history. The pier first opened in 1963 and was the first fishing pier constructed on Hatteras Island. Its reputation grew even further after a world-record red drum weighing more than 94 pounds was caught near the pier in 1984.
Today, anglers continue to visit the Avon Fishing Pier for the chance to cast a line into some of the Outer Banks’ productive coastal waters, particularly during the seasonal runs of red drum. Visitors will also find fishing supplies, snacks, seating, restrooms, a fish-cleaning station, and other conveniences on site. Even if fishing isn’t on the itinerary, the pier offers a classic Hatteras Island experience and a memorable perspective of the Atlantic coastline.
