Out here, where the land meets the ocean, stories aren’t just told—they’re felt. They drift on the salt air, roll in with the waves, and sometimes seem to linger along the shoreline itself.

During Tales From the Tides, gather around the fire as the folks at Hatteras Island Ocean Center share a collection of coastal stories—some mysterious, some a little eerie, and others that honor the generations who came before us. It’s an evening of atmosphere, history, and just the right touch of the unexpected.

Roast s’mores, settle in under the open sky, and let the stories carry you away.

Nothing captures the true flavor of the Outer Banks quite like fresh softshell crab, harvested locally and served just hours from water to table. From classic sandwiches to inventive small plates and decadent dinners, it remains a coastal favorite that’s hard to pass up.

A total of 38 restaurants are taking part in the 4th Annual Outer Banks National Softshell Week, happening May 11–16, 2026. On Hatteras Island, try local favorites like Good Winds Restaurant, Cafe Pamlico, Buxton Seafood, and Sonny’s Restaurant for your softshell fix. This weeklong celebration invites both locals and visitors to explore a restaurant crawl showcasing creative softshell crab dishes, with diners casting votes for their favorites.

New this year are crab inspired cocktails, special in restaurant appearances from Sheldon the Crab, and the debut of the Softshell Express. This immersive tour, produced by Outer Banks Adventures, offers guests the chance to visit local crab shedders and participating restaurants while enjoying tapas style tastings. Tickets will be available soon.

So what exactly is a softshell crab? It is a crab that has recently shed its hard outer shell, leaving it tender and fully edible. Because timing is critical, these crabs are carefully monitored and harvested at just the right moment, often within hours of molting, to preserve their delicate texture. The process is hands on and time sensitive, reflecting the expertise and tradition of local watermen.

Plan your trip and experience one of the Outer Banks’ most iconic seafood traditions!

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is a world-renowned fishing event held off the coast of Morehead City, North Carolina, with many anglers launching from Hatteras Island to take advantage of its prime location. Hatteras sits near the meeting point of the cold Labrador currents and the warm Gulf Stream, creating rich fishing grounds teeming with blue marlin and other big game fish. Anglers from around the globe compete to land trophy catches, enjoying both the high-stakes competition and the scenic, wildlife-filled waters surrounding the Outer Banks.

The Hatteras Marlin Club, located on Cape Hatteras in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, sits just 18 miles from the Gulf Stream and its world-renowned fishing grounds. Nicknamed “Game Fish Junction,” this unique meeting of the cold Labrador currents and the warm Gulf Stream creates ideal conditions for all kinds of fishing. Seeing the potential for big-game angling, Charles F. Johnson, Earl Phillips, and Luther Hodges founded the Club in 1959, providing a private retreat where anglers from near and far could share their passion for the sport. Over the years, the Club has grown to offer a range of amenities, from secured dockage to fine dining.

The Club’s centerpiece is the Annual Invitational Blue Marlin Release Tournament, held each June. It’s a week-long celebration of fishing, fun, food, and camaraderie that draws enthusiasts from across the region.

Nestled in the village of Hatteras at the southern tip of the island chain, the Club is perfectly situated for guests who stay ashore. Visitors can explore local shops, enjoy sightseeing tours, hop on a ferry to neighboring islands, or simply relax on the island’s pristine beaches.

Now in its third decade, the Hatteras Village Offshore Open kicks off the NC Billfish Series with a long-standing tradition of world-class competition.

Proceeds benefit the Hatteras Village Civic Association, helping fund scholarships for college-bound residents and support local charitable efforts. Join us in Hatteras Village for exceptional offshore fishing, genuine coastal hospitality, and the chance to be part of something meaningful.
