Fun Hatteras Activities

Buxton is the hub for all things Hatteras Island. Filled to the brim with things to do, places to eat and sites to see, you’ll love every second of your tour in Buxton!

8:00am: Start your morning out right at the world-renowned Orange Blossom Bakery. With generations of experience under their belts, these folks know just how to make your mouth water with every delicious bite! Don’t be fooled by the modest exterior, these treats can pack some serious punch! On the must try list: an Apple Ugly, a Double-Dipped Donut, a Cinnamon Twist, and for the really hungry, a Breakfast Burrito!

9:00am: The sun isn’t so high in the sky just yet that it’s sweltering and the Lighthouse has just opened for climbing so the lines shouldn’t be too crazy. Start at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and get some cardio in with a morning climb.

10:00am: After working up a sweat on the climb, hop a parking lot over and enjoy the rest of the morning at the lifeguarded beach with the lighthouse at your back.

12:30pm: Pop on over to Buxton Munch, a funky little sandwich shop in the heart of Buxton. Try one of their delicious wraps or groovy specials! You won’t regret it! While you’re waiting, step next door and check out Daniel Pullen's Photography's new studio!

1:30pm: While your food settles, take an hour to get some shopping done. Grab some great reads at Buxton Village Books, take the kiddos to their own personal wonderland at Hatteras Toy Store & Candy Island and swipe some trendy threads at Daydreams on the northern end. For more shops in the area, visit our “Hatteras Island Shopping” page under the Explore Hatteras tab.

2:30pm: Grab some afternoon shade and explore island nature in the Buxton Woods. With two NPS designated trails, you can choose the short loop (Buxton Woods Trail: ¾ mile loop) or the 9-mile trek (Open Ponds Trail: 4.5 miles each direction).

4:00pm: Assuming you took the short loop, wrap up your day with a beach ride to Cape Point. No 4-wheel drive? No problem! Head to Canadian Hole just north of town and have some fun on the sound side. Enjoy some watersports such as stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, tubing, and more, or just relax and enjoy the island as the sun gets low in the sky.

5:00pm: Head to your castle and freshen up for dinner

6:30pm: Drop by Diamond Shoals Restaurant & Sushi Bar for a delicious seafood feast. Try the amazing sushi rolls or a variety of other dishes for any palette. Want to try something else? Check out other restaurants under our Explore Hatteras tab
