Day 1 – Climb the Bodie Island Lighthouse

Stretching 156 feet into the air, this lighthouse towers over the island and is easily accessible as you head South from Whalebone Junction. Upon arrival, it’s easy to see why so many visitors head this way to take photos. The lighthouse enjoys a unique facade made up of bold black and white stripes, allowing it to stand out starkly against the greens and blues of its natural coastal surroundings. If you want to see just how impressive this lighthouse can be, consider climbing to the observation deck starting the third Friday in April through Columbus Day. Tickets are typically sold at $10.00 for adults and $5 for seniors as well as kids aged 11 and under. 8 visitors are allowed to climb at a time for the self-guided tour that rewards you with stunning panoramic views once you conquer the 200 steps up. From the top, you can count on enjoying the amazing Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound vistas that are always worth capturing on camera.

Day 2 – Explore the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

For travelers heading to Hatteras Island who have a passion for wildlife, adding a stop at the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge might just end up being the highlight of your journey! Located South of Oregon Inlet and the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, this Wildlife Refuge is home to over 400 species of birds making it a haven of opportunity for those with binoculars in hand. The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is adored for its wildlife diversity which can be viewed from the soundside boardwalk. One of the more impressive artifacts on-site includes a 12-foot-tall lens dating back to 1854 that was used in the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for years.

Day 5 – Expand Your Touring Horizons

There’s no reason not to expand your fun further on Hatteras Island by hopping on the ferry and enjoying a day trip to Ocracoke Island while you’re here. You can drive to the ferry and enjoy this ride for free that takes around 40 minutes total depending on the time of day you board. While Ocracoke Island is a great place to explore charming shops and unique galleries, the ferry ride over is equally scenic and inviting.
