When a little history infused into your vacation would go a long way toward the fun of your stay, heading to the Outer Banks is always the right choice. Here, the past is preserved meticulously through incredible landmarks and among them is the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. Whether you’re looking for incredible photo opportunities or want to get up close to a structure that’s long stood vigil over the shoreline, this is a stop to make sure to add to your list.
A Beacon of Maritime Safety That Still Stands Today
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is located at 1101 Corolla Village Road in Corolla and dates back to 1875. Just 15 miles North of Duck, it was designed using nearly a million bricks and towers 162 feet into the air. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse and its compound are open to visitors looking to indulge in learning more about Victorian-style architecture. There’s a museum shop on-site as well for visitors to check out when they arrive.
A Rich History to Discover
When you visit the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, you’ll find yourself face to face with an important landmark that was added to the National Register of Historic Places back in October of 1973. That said, the lighthouse’s vital role in the region dates back significantly further. The lighthouse was built in response to a number of shipwrecks that had occurred in the 1800s around the surrounding 40 miles of dark coastline. While the plans for the lighthouse were put into motion in 1872, it wasn’t officially ready to be lit until December 1, 1875. The illumination of the lighthouse successfully kept mariners from danger and over the course of its lifetime, the keeper’s dwelling on-site has housed more than two dozen lightkeepers and their families. Today, the lighthouse continues to shine more than 18 nautical miles out.
Climb Your Way to a Great View
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is one of just two lighthouses on the Outer Banks that’s open for guests to climb. A trip up the 220 steps to the observation deck takes anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes depending on your pace and is available to enjoy between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm March 23 through November 30. Climbs are allowed, weather permitting, and it’s $13 to purchase an observation deck ticket for those 4 and up. You can exclusively buy your ticket right at the front door using cash, credit cards, or checks. If you’re visiting the lighthouse as a group of 15 or more, you’ll qualify for a special large group tour rate upon request. The Currituck Lighthouse also hosts weddings whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony or a large gathering to say, “I do.”
