They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, before a big day out at the beach, that is certainly true. As you know, food is one of the many things Hatteras Island does right, so we did some major taste-testing and narrowed down our favorite Hatteras breakfast spots at the beach and some of their top menu items that you don’t want to miss out on!

BEST BREAKFAST SPOTS ON Hatteras Island

SONNY’S (Hatteras): Sonny’s is one of the longest running and well established breakfast hot spots on Hatteras Island. Family owned and operated, this is your down home traditional breakfast treasure trove where all the locals eat. Not too frilly, but consistently delicious, Sonny’s is the “bacon and eggs” joint that you don’t want to skip. Note: DO skip the carb count for one meal and don’t leave without trying their home fries. They cut them, cook them and serve them up juuuust right!

Hotcakes: Light and fluffy, they have this breakfast staple down to a science.

Anchored: Bowl of grits layered with patty sausage, two over medium eggs and cheese.

Windy Day: Sausage gravy biscuit, served with an egg and home fries

HARBOR DELI (Hatteras): Under new ownership for 2018, Donna and Phil Tokazowski have revived Harbor Deli, keeping some of her same breakfast goodies, but adding some new ones as well. Perched on the docks of Hatteras Harbor Marina, you can eat a yummy breakfast sandwich while peering over the water.

Johnny Buck: Tomato, Bacon, Provolone, with touch of mayo on a bagel

Breakfast Biscuit: Fresh Baked Biscuit, Egg, Cheese, Bacon or sausage

Offshore: Egg, Bacon, Sausage, Peppers, Onion and Salsa, wrap

ORANGE BLOSSOM BAKERY (Buxton): Originally built as Orange Blossom Motel in the 1950’s, this quaint little bakery has a line out the door most days in the season as people clamor to get one of their famous “Apple Uglies” among some of their other delicious baked goods.

Bagel Burner: Bagel, cream cheese, red onion, bacon, lettuce and tomato

Breakfast Burrito: Homemade salsa, scrambled egg and cheese on fresh tortilla. Four choices: veggie, ham, bacon and sausage

Apple Ugly: Featured in Our State Magazine, this monstrous treat comes deep fried, as originally intended, or baked for the health-conscious. If you really want to throw caution (and your cholesterol) to the wind, you can also get them topped with chocolate!

Double Dipped Donut: Dipped in glaze and then dipped in chocolate

FATTY’S (Buxton): Island local, Jeff Dawson, and wife, Rachel, run this fun little spot on the north end of Buxton. Eat in or walk across the street and have breakfast on the beach.

Chicken & Waffles: Fresh Belgian Waffle topped with fried chicken and drizzled with syrup

Shrimp & Grits: Andouille Sausage sautéed with shrimp, mushrooms, onions and peppers in a black pepper gravy over stone ground grits

STU’S DONUTS (Avon): You may remember Sue and Steve (Stu) from their days in the Midgett Realty maintenance department, but now they’re serving breakfast to the masses. Stu’s Donuts by day and Ketch 55 by night, this is one breakfast spot you don’t want to skip!

Pimento Cheese Grits: Homemade. Delicious.

Jersey Pork Roll: Thick-sliced Taylor’s pork roll on a griddled Kaiser with an over-easy egg and American cheese

Breakfast Burrito: Ground sausage, eggs, potatoes, green onions, topped with house-made salsas, shredded cheese and sour cream
