Avid runners and supportive walkers, adults and children, couples and singles, real estate agents, bankers, EMTs and linemen. One thing all of these folks and too many more to list had in common was that they participated in the 2016 Memorial Day Shore Break 5K sponsored by Midgett Realty. Although a tropical system made for some less than ideal conditions, hundreds of folks gathered in Avon, NC to honor the wounded and fallen, while simultaneously supporting the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund.
The fund started by the late Kenneth Oden, lifelong resident of Hatteras Village, was created as a trust in his Will for the stated purpose of improving the lives of the children of Hatteras Island. The trust was in time made “sustainable”, so that the entire trust would not be used to fund projects, but a portion would be invested so that various projects could be funded through the return of investments, making the fund available for generations to come. Supplemental fundraisers such as the Memorial Day Shore Break 5K and Thanksgiving Surfin’ Turkey 5K also go towards keeping the fund from quick depletion.
As this year’s Memorial Day Shore Break 5K took place, we were reminded of the importance of our community, our children, our country and all of the service men and women who have lost their lives defending us.
