In the current state of things around the globe, it seems safe to say that all any of us really wants is a break. Stress levels have been firing on all cylinders and it seems that everyone is impacted by Covid-19 in one way or another. We feel very fortunate to live in an area where we can roam about safely due to the nature of the landscape and are thankful that we have the opportunity to share this place we love with you as well. And do it safely! So come to Hatteras and “coastal distance” with us!

Top 5 Ways to “Coastal Distance” on Hatteras Island

1. Beach

Hitting the beach is obviously the number one way to “coastal distance” on Hatteras Island. With over 50 miles of pristine seashore, you can easily go off the beaten path without much effort and find a secluded spot that’s all your own. Pack the cooler and create your own fun-filled day in the sun with a smorgasborg of activities ranging from reading a good book under the umbrella to swimming in the warm turquoise waters of the Outer Banks.

2. Hike

Perhaps not the first thing that will cross your mind when coming to Hatteras Island, but aside from our clean beaches and clear waters, Hatteras Island is also known for its sizeable maritime forest. Throughout Buxton Woods and beyond there are a variety of trails that will allow you to put boot to soil for a fun day of adventure below the canopy of one of NC’s greatest treasures. With a difficulty rating of “easy”, this is an activity the whole family can enjoy.

3. Cast

Offshore, inshore or in the surf, cast a line for some the best fishing the East Coast has to offer. At Buxton Point where the Labrador Current and Gulf Stream meet, fishing lover’s dreams are often fulfilled. If you’re not ready to brave the surf all on your own, book a charter at one of Hatteras Landing’s two full-service marinas for a day on the water.

4. Paddle

Big, small or none at all, choose your wave and PADDLE! Body surfing, boogie boarding, surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, rafting, there are so many ways to enjoy the water with a paddle. Choose your level of intensity and make the day your own at the beach, sound, or on the canal. If you’re a beginner or don’t want to cart your equipment all the way to Hatteras, there are plenty of rental spots that will hook you up with the gear that you need.

5. Pool

Booking a Hatteras vacation rental home for your family as opposed to a hotel or resort is the smartest way to comfortably vacation with the peace of mind that social distancing can be easily maintained. A private pool at your vacation rental is the cherry on top! Crowds are non-existant and summer sun is next to a sure thing. Dive into some classic pool games, create a little make-shift tiki bar, lounge poolside with a summer beach read or just relax until your heart’s content!
