SHELL-EBRATE Outer Banks National Soft-Shell Crab Week!
Every spring, the Outer Banks comes alive with one of the coast’s most delicious traditions: National Soft-Shell Crab Week. From May 11–16, 2026, restaurants across the Outer Banks will showcase fresh, locally harvested soft-shell crabs in creative dishes that celebrate the flavors and heritage of coastal North Carolina.

Whether you are a longtime seafood lover or planning your first Outer Banks getaway, Soft-Shell Crab Week is the perfect excuse to explore local restaurants, sample seasonal specialties, and experience the authentic taste of the OBX.

What Is a Soft-Shell Crab?
Soft-shell crabs are blue crabs that have recently molted, shedding their hard outer shell and revealing a tender, fully edible shell underneath. This short window makes soft-shell crab season one of the most anticipated culinary events along the coast.

Freshness is everything. On the Outer Banks, many soft-shell crabs go straight from local shedders to restaurant kitchens within hours, creating a true dock-to-table experience.

From crispy sandwiches and tacos to gourmet small plates and chef-inspired entrees, every restaurant adds its own local twist to this seasonal favorite.

A Weeklong Culinary Shell-elebration
Now in its fourth year, Outer Banks National Soft-Shell Crab Week continues to grow in popularity. More than 38 participating restaurants across the OBX, including 3 on Hatteras Island, will feature specialty soft-shell crab dishes throughout the week. Diners can visit multiple restaurants, try unique menu creations, and even vote for their favorites.

This year’s shell-elebration also introduces several exciting additions, including:

• Crab-inspired cocktails
• Appearances from Sheldon the Crab
• The new Soft-Shell Express tasting tour experience
• Tapas-style samplings at participating restaurants
• Opportunities to meet local crab shedders and learn about the harvesting process

The Soft-Shell Express, produced by Outer Banks Adventures, offers visitors a behind-the-scenes culinary experience with stops at local crab shedders and participating restaurants.

The Toucana Take
We interviewed local chef, Tyler Naughton, of Toucana Grill in Hatteras Village who was more than excited to join this year’s shell-ebration. His local roots, love of soft-shells, and passion for all things culinary transpired into what he claims is a simple dish without much needed to help it stand out and shine. We won’t tell his secrets, but we will say his take on the soft-shell crab sandwich is worth trying! Head over to Teach’s Lair Marina, savor the flavor, and don’t forget to scan the QR code to vote!
