The art community is strong on Hatteras Island. The natural beauty of the island is an inspiration for artists near and far, and many have chosen to open up shop and share their creativity with the world. During this time of Coastal Distance Learning on Hatteras Island, we’ve researched what some of our favorite artisans and teachers are doing to instill their passion for art into all who embrace it. Young or old, there are tons of opportunities for some art-spiration on Hatteras Island.

ART-SPIRATIONAL ACTIVITIES ON HATTERAS ISLAND

Studio 12 | Avon, NC
Choose from a large assortment of pottery along with 4 paint glazes, and the staff at Studio 12 will wrap it up along with 2 paint brushes and a paint pallet. Paint at home and take it back to them and they’ll fire it! Paint by Wednesday, pick up Friday. They also offer low shipping for pottery painted Thursday or Friday. For more details, check here.

Kinnakeet Clay Studio & Showroom | Avon, NC
In place of their regular pottery classes, Kinnakeet Clay Studio & Showroom has adapted their teachings to private Zoom pottery classes. Begin with a slab of wet clay and use textures, stamps, molds, and your imagination to create a functional or decorative piece of pottery for your home or garden. Simply register online and stop by their studio to pick up your clay and pottery-making toolkit before class. Follow along with their instructor virtually from the comfort of your cottage, and after class, take your finished item(s) back to the studio and they will glaze, fire, and ship your piece to you (if you’re not available for local pickup).

Family Jewels | Hatteras Village, NC
Stop by Family Jewels in Hatteras Village and watch local artisan, Wendy Sisler, make her beautiful lamplight beads that come together to make some of the island’s most unique and charming statement pieces. Check out her various other mixed-media creations for some inspiration for the jewelry maker in your home.
