Our team on the ground is already in the field assessing damages and trying to get our offices up and running as our Hatteras Village campus did get water in the office buildings. At this time, access to Hatteras Island remains closed.

The mandatory evacuation for Dare County remains in place due to hazardous conditions, including downed power lines and trees, impassable roadways and widespread power outages. Access into Dare County will remain restricted until preliminary assessments are completed to determine that conditions are safe.
At this time we regret to inform you that Dare County Emergency Management has imposed an Evacuation Order effective Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 12 noon.

While many folks are used to locally funded emergency services with paid employees, such as police, fire and EMT, some of Hatteras Island's services are volunteer only. Like in the days of the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, water and fire rescue are 100% volunteer-based, with bravely trained islanders risking their lives to save the lives of others, locals and visitors alike.
