Home Blog November on Hatteras Island

10/30/2020

2020 feels very much like The Upside Down. Our surroundings look the same, but everything is very, very different. For those of you who didn’t binge watch the Netflix sci-fi series, “Stranger Things”, The Upside Down is basically a parallel universe where everything is just that, upside down or opposite. Nine months into it, like you, we’re just trying to make the best of it. Fortunately for us, we have that big, beautiful beach to get us through. Fortunately for you, Midgett Realty has over 450 rental properties so that you can too.

As we’ve noted, Hatteras Island is a great place for Coastal Distancing and Coastal Distance Learning. And our vacation rental homes avoid the high-traffic lobbies and shared common areas that are necessary in hotels and lodges. What we haven’t mentioned, and you possibly haven’t considered, is Hatteras Island for the holidays. The last weeks of summer are winding down and pumpkin-spice everything is juuuust around the corner. A beach vacation may not even be on your radar when considering holiday plans, but hey, we’re in The Upside Down. Let’s make the most of it!

If you’ve ever considered a beach vacation for the holidays, your mind likely went to the tropics rather than the East Coast, but there is something to be said for a drive-to destination in the midst of a pandemic.

WHY HATTERAS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

1. It’s Drive-To

If you’ve ever considered a beach vacation for the holidays, your mind likely went to the tropics rather than the East Coast, but there is something to be said for a drive-to destination in the midst of a pandemic. It’s different kind of experience, but it’s unique and wonderful all the same.

2. Cheaper Rates

The rates for our vacation rentals, much like everywhere else, are date driven. As most people tend to think beach in the summer, demand isn’t usually as high in the late fall/early winter, meaning you can often find a more lavish home at a lesser rate. What better way to spend the holidays without overextending your budget?

3. Fewer Folks

While social distancing and a pandemic aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive, they definitely, as we all know too well, go hand-in-hand. The appeal for the shoulder and off seasons during a normal year is fewer folks. Shorter lines, lesser wait times, zero crowds, actual quiet. As we figure out Covid-19, that appeal has gone straight from bonus perk to necessity.

4. Laid Way, WAY Back

With lesser folks, the island’s residents usually get back to where they can breathe again. Business starts to slow down, the weather goes from stifling to comfortable, days are shorter. We get to rest. And with rest comes relaxation. Getting to know the already laid-back local population is the best way to experience Hatteras Island. With so much culture and history, you’re sure to leave with a different outlook on island living.

5. Extended Beach Driving Hours

For everyone’s safety and the protection of the wildlife, the National Park Service (NPS) limits beach driving hours and ORV accessibility during the peak months. In the fall, they begin to roll back restrictions and eventually open all designated ORV routes to night driving.

6. The Same Beautiful Beaches

While the seasons may change, one thing that remains consistent is the beauty of the beach. The weather is usually still in its prime, but even if you catch a storm, shelling and exploring are top notch. There’s no better time to go treasure hunting than just after a storm swell to see what the ocean has churned up and left behind.
